How to Help Someone in Crisis

If you’re concerned about someone who may be suicidal or in mental health crisis:

DO:
  • Ask directly: “Are you thinking about suicide?”
  • Listen without judgment
  • Take them seriously
  • Stay with them until help arrives
  • Remove access to harmful means if possible
  • Help them contact a crisis line or professional
DON’T:
  • Leave them alone
  • Debate whether suicide is right or wrong
  • Promise to keep their suicidal feelings a secret
  • Minimize their problems or feelings
  • Act shocked or judgmental
  • Blame yourself for their feelings

Remember: Crisis is Temporary, Help is Available

Hurricane survivors face unique mental health challenges. What you're feeling is a normal
response to an abnormal situation. There is no shame in asking for help.
